Buying REALY shiny spandex leggings? Where?

Postby peterbu » Wed Aug 29, 2012 11:49 am

Hello.

I bought a few shiny lycra leggings. They are all made by material 80% Polyamide 20% Elastane but the problem is that they don't looks the same. You can see on this photo my two leggings: http://postimage.org/image/9ubo0juot/. This ones the left are from Neckermann, this ones on the right are from American Apparel. As you can see on the picture leggings on the left looks a lot more shinier and silkier. I don't know why they looks different because material is the same.

I would like to ask you where I can buy leggings which are made by 80% Polyamide 20% Elastane and are shiny and silky like this on the left in the photo? Unfortunately Neckermann don't sell this leggings anymore but I would really like to buy new ones. And please don't suggest latex or leather leggings because I don't like them so much.

Thank you.

Well for starters, polyamide in most of these product tags is just a fancier way of saying "nylon". And elastane is a fancier way of saying "spandex". They probably don't look the same because they're not. It's that simple.
Many of these tags are usually misinformed.

They're both shiny though. If you post a picture of that legging in the right by itself, more than half the members here would think it's shiny spandex. The one in the left is simply shinier and it's because of the nylon being slightly higher in concentration.

I'd take a guess and say the one in the right is the traditional 80% nylon 20% spandex legging, and the one in the left is 85% nylon 15% spandex...

It could also be that both are 80% nylon 20% spandex but the one in the right has underwent a matte effect during its manufacturing, which means it was deliberately dulled down. But that's the least likely probability because if that was the case, the legging in the right would look blander than it is in your picture. This leads me to believe the one in the left has a higher nylon concentration but simply wasn't mentioned on the tag. To many companies, it's all the same. Some companies categorize things differently as well. So there are two possible explanations, either the legging in the left has 5% higher nylon concentration but was tagged incorrectly or the legging in the right was deliberately dulled down to become matte. The first possibility I gave is the one most likely true because the matte one isn't a strong case given that the right legging retained elements of its shininess. If it was really mattified, it would look blander. Both possibilities are open.

To go for a shinier legging, make sure the nylon composition is higher than 80%. The shiniest I could think of is 90% nylon 10% spandex, typically called "satin spandex" by people in the industry because it has a satin effect.
So for a shinier legging, make sure:
1. That the nylon concentration is 80% or above. 85% is good, 90% is even better if you're into the shininess.
2, That the fabric is regular and non-mattified. If it was mattified, even the shiniest of products could lose alot of their shininess.

I don't think you're right. If I would choose 85%-15% or even 90%-10% leggings would be even less shinier. I saw before on some pictures that that kind of leggings are less shiny and smooth than 80%-20%. Look this two links below and you will see that this is true.

This two my leggins are 80%-20%. Companies said that on their websites.

Do you maybe know where I can buy leggings that are so shiny like those on the left in the photo? I really wish to buy ones like this because this ones are not so new anymore and I need to have some new in my wardrobe for my next girlfriend :).

You need to trust me on this one. I've been working with fabrics for a very long time so I know what I'm talking about. ;)

The higher the % of nylon, the shinier. The lower the % of nylon, the less shiny.

Spandex % has to do with the stretch. Nylon % has to do with its shininess. That said, make sure the legging isn't mattified. There are many reasons why leggings with high % of nylon don't look shiny. The most common reason is company ignorance. Many companies mistag their products, it's a fact. The second reason has to do with the fabric manufacturing methods. Milliskin knitting fabrics tend to give a less shiny effect. Mattified fabrics tend to give it less shine, even if the nylon % is very high. So if you see a tag that says 85% nylon but isn't shiny, it could be:
1. Mistagged.
2. Mattiefied.
3. In other cases made of Miliskin techniques, which isn't the kind of technique that you'd enjoy.

If you want to go for a shiny legging, first thing you gotta do is make sure the % of nylon is somewhere between 85% and 90%. The higher the nylon, the shinier. Always remember that.
Next thing you have to do is make sure the legging isn't mattified. If it's 90% nylon but mattified, it means it wont be shiny. If it's 90% nylon and regular (not mattified), you can bet your life savings it'll be very shiny.
Also make sure the fabric isn't something like Milliskin because that's usually the worst kind of fabric for creating a shine effect.

Wish I can help you here but my knowledge of internet based stores is almost ignorant and old fashioned. You can always go to the local tailor shop and specify your own legging. Never goes wrong there.

Hm... but why on the photos 85%-15% leggings looks so much non-shiny? It's weird that all of this photos show matted leggings :). That is weird to me :).

Can please someone gives me link to the site which offer very shiny leggings? like this one on the photo (left).

These on Gojane looks really great. They have 95% Nylon, 5% Spandex. It is more than Lycra Clad said...huh.
But I don't trust so much official pictures. Leggings from American Apparel also looks a loooot shiny but in real they are not so much.

@superheroinelinks did you buy some of this leggings from the Gojane? If yes can you please take a picture? It is a lot better to see amateur picture than official one.

I think this leggings in the upper side of the photo are the same as my black on the left side of the photo. But the problem is that this leggings from the upper side are very expensive. I would like to get some cheaper.

So is it the way the leggings pr spandex look that's most import?
Or is it the way they feel most important?
It's hard to get both, but to me, it the feel that's the most important.

The most important to me is how they looks. Honestly this leggings on the left on my photo looks very shiny and smooth but when I touch them in one way they are not so smooth but in the other way they are very smooth. Leggings on the right feels smoother in any direction. But anyway I would like to get leggings like those on the left.

There's a lady I take my gear to who does custom sewing and what-not, she's been making & fabricating for 3+ decades and according to her nylon, spandex, lycra and all the different terms are all the same stuff, just different manufacturers. I don't think she's entirely right but....

IMO it just comes down to who manufactured the fabric, I've seen variations in thickness, softness, shinyness...it's all over the board. Best thing to do is buy from a place that has a return policy. Over the years I've bought so many garments made of various blends and each mateial is unique unto itself. LycraClad is right when he suggest one blend SHOULD be more shiny then another, but I've found inconsistency across the board. Some material looks amazing in photo's and from 15-feet away it can look almost like liquid or mirror-like...but up-close or touching it, it's a whole different story. Just keep searching until you find what you're happy with.

Yes I'm searching but the problem is that I don't want to buy too many leggings because I don't want that anyone get my package. It's adventure for me to buy one new leggings :). But yes..That is my big goal now to find and buy one really great leggings like thos on the left on my photo.

I think some leggings from the Black milk clothing company have this perfect material but I would like to get leggings which are all black and also cheaper.

I know the expert who you should consult with, dare I suggest he specializes in leggings and he's very familar with the Black Milk company....let me drop him an email and see if we can get him to respond here.

But again, from my experience it really comes down to getting the product in your hands and seeing how it feels and shines. Just yesterday I was looking at these dark navy tights that appeared somewhat matte, but once worn they seemed much shinier...and some material glistens under lights whereas other materials won't. Each material is just unique to itself and it depends on how the manufacturer finishes/treats it. Frustrating but part of the hunt.

Ok give me his e-mail and I'll ask him.

I like to see amateur photos of leggings. Those photos I trust and not some official ones. It's interesting that leggings from Neckermann did not look very shiny on official photos but when I get them I love them. Unfortunately I did not buy then more than just one leggings. And today they are not selling them anymore.

I think I will need to take a risk and buy some more leggings on the internet.

HI,
im about to buy a leotard from DHYA
this one...
http://www.dhya-shop.de/product_info.ph ... cts_id=146

im not sure whether to get matte or shiny. Im thinking matte so i can wear it under everyday clothes as underwear. But im not sure.
does anyone have any pics of matte lycra they could post here?
even better, has anyone ordered matte from DHYA?

i want it to be nylon but not too shiny. I dont want that nasty rough kind of lycra that speedo is now using for most of their swimsuits (you know the one?) If i get matte from DHYA, it wont be that horrible rough material will it?

thanks

Go shiny or go home! And I'm sorry, I've never heard the term "too shiny" and leotard used in the same sentence :?

I usually buy at https://www.rubberloft.com/ but some of the outfits are way too extravagant, but I guess there's a demand for clothing like that as well. They also started selling latex pieces, if someone's interested
