Vintage spandex disintegrates

Postby lycra85 » Fri Mar 15, 2019 3:58 pm

I have bought numerous times a vintage piece of spandex from ebay, but got disappointed when they arrived and crumbled to dust as I touched them. I still have some 70s/80s leotards that are still in pretty good nick, but I wonder if anyone else was facing the problem, and is there anything to do to prevent it from happening.

How vintage are we talking here? Stuff from the very early 90's should be still somewhat bullet proof because just after and around 1985 DuPont just began add phenolic antioxidant and a dialkyl phenyl phosphite to spandex to improve its resistance to heat (think of the dryer). Many women didn't understand or didn't care that you shouldn't throw your leggings in the dryer after it was washed using harsh 80's 90's detergent (the other problem with spandex care). Fortunately/Unfortunately I'm old enough to know this ;)

The other thing to remember and lament is that these items were never conceived to last 20 let alone 30+ years. The designers were probably not thinking "I wonder in 2019 if someone will wear this outfit for fetish purposes...we best use the finest spandex fibers and dyes"

LOL

So I guess it is a possible scenario, that the seller just shoved the garment in the washing machine or dryer, not knowing it may damage the fabric. I've been taking good care of my collection, and never noticed it starting on its own.

The biggest issue I find with the older items is the waistbands in shorts and leggings really start to go. (they make that stretching sound that makes you cringe as its more of a rip) The spandex usually holds up pretty good. I have a few late 90's items that have some patches of disintegration that was probably from suntan lotion or makeup. But as themagic_oftights said, these items were not meant to last this long, to that end most have help up incredibly well considering their age.

It even started happening on a leotard I bought just a couple of years ago from a dancewear store. I'm wondering if I'm handling them wrong.

It can also depend on how they're stored. Just like bike tires can get dry rot, spandex can do the same.
All hot women should be in shiny spandex. So I'm getting changed into one so I can show off my wardrobe fulltime!
